The oral microbiome holds the key to unlocking better health
The use of oral microbiome testing to help patients and dental professionals understand their oral health has been a rising trend in the last ten years. We now understand the links between oral health and general health, and how improving the oral microbiome can have direct links on both.
Dr Victoria Sampson, the founder of THS Labs, has been incorporating oral microbiome testing into her daily practice with patients for many years. She eventually however stumbled across a problem. She was finding that often the results of an oral microbiome test were not always accurate or not necessarily reflective of what she saw in a patient's mouth. She soon came to understand that it was not just absence or presence of bacteria that may indicate health and/or disease, but how the patient's body responded to that bacteria.
She understood that within each bacteria, were species that were more 'bad' than others and that the current microbiome tests on the market were not looking in such depth at these.
The tests on the market were not looking at a patient's ability to fight disease and their genetic mutations that may predispose them to disease in the future.
Fast forward many years, and Dr Sampson created her own test using her own patient's saliva results to build it. She curated a recipe of markers that were able to:
